As distinctive as Ba Sing Se is in Avatar, the portrayal here is 2D and nondescript outside of a vague coloration similarity.

Following up from the original Override , Super Mech League shifts gears from an alien invasion plot to a more straightforward sports analogy. It's basically like the 2011 film Real Steel if Hugh Jackman was replaced with a still image of a female trainer who talks all about the progress the player is making climbing up the ranks. The "story" mode is a layer of voiced dialogue in the menus that funnels players into online fights. It's a rare thing when a cartoon-based video game gets as much buzz as Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl has thus far. Avatar: The Last Airbender is my favourite series of all time - I watched the whole 61-episode run three times during the pandemic and have an enormous tattoo based on The Tale of Iroh lining the inside of my right bicep. I’m admittedly a little less into The Legend of Korra , but it’s still probably in my top ten TV shows. This is a universe I’ve devoted hundreds of hours to, and I’ll be damned if Nick is bringing out a Smash -esque brawler that forgets about some of the best characters in animation history.


The small arenas provide chaotic fun against human opponents, and there's definitely fun to be had with Override 2 with a group of like-minded buddies on a couch. However, the online focus and complete lack of a campaign structure kill any drive to keep unlocking cosmetics and bots in single player, and those are the only two options available. Put as simply as possible, _Override 2: Super Mech League _ feels like a demo for a larger experience that doesn't exist.
